The Sheridan School District would like to thank the community members, parents, students, and staff members who attended the District Community Meeting on February 23rd.
The meeting was an opportunity for the Board of Education and the district administration to provide information to a wider audience regarding:
1. A proposed master facilities plan that is being considered in conjunction with a BEST Grant application
Coming out of the meeting, it is important to emphasis that any construction associated with the BEST Grant is 100% contingent on the District successfully receiving significant funding from the state through the grant. As part of the BEST Grant, the State of Colorado has set aside $1.1 Billion (yes, with a "b") to invest in improving school facilities throughout the state. Sheridan is pursuing this grant to ensure that the children in this community have the best possible school buildings and educational experience available.
In regards to the budget forecasts shared at the meeting, Sheridan is facing a very real funding cut of almost $3 Million over the next two years. This represents a significant decrease to the district’s general operating fund. There will be impacts. However, the district is dedicated to minimizing the impact on students and the quality of education we offer here in Sheridan. It should be noted that the cut in State funding is impacting EVERY school district in Colorado. Sheridan is not alone. In addition, Sheridan is in a more stable financial position than many other school districts throughout the state.
The February 23rd meeting was a first step in identifying those aspects of our school system that the community most values and will help frame conversations about how to protect the quality of education offered despite a significant decrease in funds. Please look for future meetings to keep all those involved with the Sheridan School District informed on changes, proposed solutions, and opportunities.
2010 U.S. Census
Written by the Aurora Public Schools Communication Department:
Everyone in the United States must be counted in the 2010 Census. This includes people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, citizens and noncitizens. By counting our country’s population, the U.S. federal government will be able to allocate more than $400 billion to states and communities based, in part on census data. This money will be used to determine locations and needs of schools, retail stores, hospitals, new housing developments, and other community facilities.
The 2010 Census is easy, important and safe, and your participation is vital. In March of 2010, census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. When you receive yours, just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided. To learn more about the 2010 Census, visit 2010.census.gov/2010census.
